Too Cold to Think of a Decent Title

Good morning on this freezing cold Wednesday *shivers and tries to smile*

I'm rethinking my current WIPs, and wondering if I should cast on lots of hats, gloves, mitts and scarves *laughs* I have actually finished my tweedy green cowl, so I shall post more about that on Friday.

Since finishing that, I have been giving my Subtle Stripes cardigan some attention. I think I've done about another inch, so not a huge amount, but enough that I feel good about finishing it sometime ;)

I have done a little bit of reading this week, which makes a nice change as I haven't read much in ages. I re-read (for the umpteenth time) Memoirs of a Geisha. It's one of my very favourite books of all time, and I read it every couple of years. It's been longer than that since the last time I picked it up, and it was like meeting an old friend.

Does anyone else re-read books they love over and over, or is it just me?!

As ever, if you want more lovely knitting and yarn along content, head to Tami's and Ginny's *smiles*

  1. I've only read that book once, but I thoroughly loved it. I might re read it too one day! Love your knit and the color. I hope you warm up soon!!

  2. Memoirs of a Geisha made a massive impact on my life! I went to Japan on a solo trip after reading it, about 12 years ago, and I even spent a day as a maiko! I vowed I would take my husband back to Kyoto one day, which was a large part of the reason we decided to spend a few years in Singapore, so that we could make a Japan visit more possible. And two years ago we managed - the three of us spent Christmas in a tiny wood and paper house in Hagashiyama (see http://www.kyoto-nene.com/) It was magical.
I know it's easy-read literature, but I can honestly say that no book has had such an impact on me before or since.

  4. Your cardigan looks great! I'm shocked that you can put it down. I'd be rushing through just to get to wear it.
It's darn cold here too! I've been wearing wool socks every day.

  5. Love that cardi! I am more impatient than you are about your projects, you know!!! :D

I also re-read books, although Memoirs of a Geisha has only been read once so far. I've re-read HIs Dark Materials trilogy several times (due a re-read on Kindle soon I think) and also Tales of the Otori - they are my favourite series, and each time I read I get something else from them. Same with The Unbearable Lightness of Being which I first read at 16 and loved and come back to every few years.

I have a loft filled with books and in our old house, before we needed a playroom, one room was lined with shelves for all my books. Just looking at them made me happy. There is no place for them in our current house which is full of kids' books, but one day I'll unpack them and put them into a new home where they can breathe again.

Hope you get warm again soon.

  6. The cold weather is acting as a catalyst for me. I can't knit fast enough. Your subtle stripes cardigan looks great. I'm sure you will have it finished soon.

  7. It's not just you, I have books that I read as a teenager that I still have and re-read. I became a fantasy fan in my early teens and I still am, so re-reading those early discoveries are like revisiting my youth.

I loved Memoirs of a Geisha too. I have it in a box somewhere, so maybe I'll dig it out and re-read it some time too.

  8. Soon we'll have to start comparing temperatures. I'll convert ours to C for you and then you'll feel better about your weather. :) Stay warm! - Alex

  9. I do re-read books but it depends on the book. I've read Harry Potter about a zillion times and I've read some of my Roald Dahl books at least that much, too. I've started Lord of the Rings at least twice and have made it about halfway through the series (which is actually six books, not three).

  10. If I didn't know better, I'd think we were neighbors based on your assessment of the weather. We're freezing here, too! Lucky for you, that cardi looks amazing. And it's big enough to warm your lap while you work on it now -- bonus! Stay warm!

  12. Love the cardigan!

I re-read like I eat comfort food-- with a smidgen of guilt that's outweighed by the pure joy of falling into familiar territory.

  14. I always re-read books. If I don't like it after the first reading then it gets sold or passed to a charity shop. Every book on my shelves is one that I love :-)

Your cardigan is looking lovely :)

  15. I have two books that I've re-read once a year for the last 10 years: Winter Solstice and The Loop. Winter Solstice Rosamunde Pilcher) is my Christmas book (I just started two days ago) and The Loop (Nicolas Evans) is my summer book. :-) I read them in English usually but I have a German copy too.

  18. I love that book too. It is one of my "I'm keeping this one" books. Some go to the charity shop (usually trashy fiction), but certain titles get kept and re-read
