What to do, what to do...?

Thank you to everyone who stopped by yesterday for your very thoughtful and interesting comments, it was really nice to see/hear/read(?!) your perspectives.

Onto today... When I posted about the awesome Crobots book my mum bought me, I had completely forgotten to post about her other present (no really, I forgot, I wasn't saving it for a second blog post at all *laughs*)

This came to me from Turkey:

According to mum, all of the ladies in the marketplace were knitting with it, and she thought it would be a fun challenge for me to make something with it. Thanks mum ;)

A bit of googling indicated that it is ladder ribbon yarn, similar to Bernat Matrix or Sirdar Firefly. Close up of the yarn, in case you've never seen it before (I know I hadn't!)

I've looked through some of the projects on Ravelry, but I'm not entirely sure what to make with this. I'm not generally a fan of how ribbon yarn knits up, and this is different anyway, so I'm trying to figure out what to do with it to make it look pretty and something I would wear.

I have actually succeeded, in a very small way, but it only uses a tiny amount of the yarn (and you'll have to wait until FO Friday for the reveal). So, any ideas?!

  1. I quite like this drop stitch scarf, done with the bernat matrix held together with an acrylic sport weight:

maybe you could do something along those lines?

  2. Maybe something with hairpin lace?

  3. I worked with a yarn like that once and it drove me nuts. The needle would sometimes go between the ladder if I wasn't careful. So annoying that I gave it up in disgust.

  4. Scarves are it's normal project. And carried along with another yarn, frou frou or not, makes even more stunning scarves.

  5. Since you said you used only a little bit, I'm going to guess you made some kind of jewelry. If so, I can't wait to see it!

I have some of this kind of yarn, and I was thinking of doing a drop-stitch scarf, too...but I keep hoping I'll find something even more stunning to do with it "someday". =)

  6. Let us know if you find a good pattern! I've some similar yarn in my stash that I bought ages ago (it was on sale and it was before I realised that I didn't really like these kind of yarns either!). I should probably just destash it, but I'd be interested to see if you could dig up a good pattern!

  7. I knit a bunch of plain garter stitch scarves as gifts with a similar type of yarn a few years ago . I would sometimes knit in between the ladders at first , but got used to working with it fairly quickly . It was an easy and looked pretty nice , if I do say so myself .
