Rain and Rainbows

Wow, it feels like ages since I last posted! I generally don't post at the weekends though, and for those of us in the UK this was a 4 day weekend to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. In perfect British tradition, it was primarily raining *laughs* Luckily I had handknits to keep me warm.

In fact, I lent my mum the cowl I was wearing as she was freezing cold - she was pleasantly surprised by how much warmth it provided despite being so light *smiles*

Anyway, onto the current knitting:

This week I finally picked up the red vest I started a while ago (I stole the needles for something else and the vest has been sitting unloved since then), and my gran's scarf, which had also been neglected for a while. And, of course, my Super Awesome Happy Rainbow Socks.

The socks only have a couple of stripes left before they are finished, so hopefully I will have them on my feet before long *grins* I can't wait to walk around on rainbows ;)

I decided to modify gran's scarf slightly:

Instead of doing the lace pattern for the whole thing, I am only doing it on the ends, with the rest in garter stitch. I was worried that having too much laciness would mean that the scarf isn't warm enough (especially as it is a soft acrylic, rather than a wool yarn). I think it works well, so hopefully gran will like it.

Bookwise, I have just finished the pictured book - A Handmaid's Tale. I thought it was about time I got around to reading it, as I've been reading a lot of dystopian books lately. I enjoyed it, I liked the way the background was revealed in little glimpses and it was an interesting premise.

As ever, if you want more lovely knitting and reading content, head to Tami's and Ginny's *smiles*

  1. Handmaid's tale is amazing right? I read it a couple of years ago, and it even prompted me to spend a day in front of the computer writing an essay about it, just so that I could get my thoughts straight. It's the only time I've ever felt the need to do that (when there hasn't been an English teacher nagging me!)

  2. Hi there :) Having worked the bank holidays, I feel like I'm waiting for the rest of the UK to catch up!

Your rainbow socks are definitely super-awesome-brilliant - such happy colours! And the scarf is looking really good.

Re: Mixing by hand - I made scones for the first time last night (I know, I know), and I have to say, mixing by hand was great for them. Overcooking them was less good, but I'm pretty pleased with how they came out :)

  3. Looks like a good solution for the scarf, and the socks are still fabulous!

Ahh dystopias. I loved the Handmaid's Tale.

  5. I finished The Handmaid's Tale this year also. I enjoyed it quite a bit, although its feasibility sometimes alarms me as do most dystopian novels. I think a solid scarf with lace ends sounds very reasonable for the scarf. It would make it warmer. I must admit that my rainbow socks are my favorites. Hope you finish yours soon and can enjoy walking on rainbows.

  10. I like the modifications you made to that scarf. It makes it look a little nicer and warmer too. If you like dystopian fiction, have you checked out the Wool series? I'd pick up the omnibus if you can. It's a great and quick read.

  12. Oh I just love Margaret Atwood. Have you read the Edible Woman? That's my favourite. As my Mom once said to me after reading an Atwood novel, "Who is this woman, and how does she know everything about us?" LOL.

They are SUPER AWESOME HAPPY. I WANT SOME!

  14. I like the scarf quite a lot... I think a little lace on the ends is better than through-out anyway. :-)

  18. Everything looks beautiful! I must say though the socks are particularly spectacular. Every time you post a photo I feel the need for striped socks.

  19. Great knitting; it's great that you got to use them too! The handmaid's Tale is such an interesting (and a little scary) book! I loved reading it.

  20. Not to mention that a plain garter middle will make it quicker to knit..

Am going to be the lone voice in the crowd here and say that I read that book a couple of years ago on recommendation from a friend, and thought it was awful!
