Colour Lovers

So, I'm participating in Knit and Crochet blog week again this year. I had such fun last year finding new blogs, and new readers, so here goes...

Today's prompt is:

Colour is one of our greatest expressions of ourselves when we choose to knit or crochet, so how do you choose what colours you buy and crochet or knit with. Have a look through your stash and see if there is a predominance of one colour. Do the same with your finished projects - do they match? Do you love a rainbow of bright hues, or more subdued tones. How much attention do you pay to the original colour that a garment is knit in when you see a pattern? Tell readers about your love or confusion over colour.

Great first topic *smiles*

I love colour. I actually have mild synesthesia , so the world is already pretty colourful to me. I'm not keen on neons or pastels, but other than that I'm a fan of pretty much all colours. Unlike most people I know, my favourite colour is orange - but you can probably tell that from my blog colourscheme *laughs*

I do tend to go through phases when it comes to what I buy or knit. Right now, almost everything I am working on is grey (I love the soothing sense I get from the colour, or lack of it!) A while back, everything that came off the needles seemed to be blue:

Then I'll go through a green phase, or a purple phase. Thinking about it, I have quite a lot of purple yarn in my stash right now, so I have a feeling that I'll end up overtaken by purple some time soon *laughs*

When it comes to knitting garments, I prefer solid or semi-solid colours. Subtle tones work well for me, so that there is depth to the colour but nothing crazy. I save the crazy colours for my socks, where pooling is welcomed and clashing colours positively encouraged *grins*

See - told you I like orange ;)

I also love playing with colour, and have experimented with dyeing my own yarn...

It's amazing what you can achieve with kool aid and food dye! I want to dye everything I can get my hands on now, but I shall resist for the time being - until I have a need for more crazy sock yarn *grins*

  1. You always have the best colours in your knitting. I know when I pop over there's going to be something pretty to look at.

  2. I always love your color choices on what you make - they match the patterns so well! Love the crazy socks too! I've never dyed with Kool Aid but have heard it's fun... I didn't love the dying in a pot process as it took so long I got bored. Your way seems definitely great for coming up with crazy sock yarns though!!

  3. I love your food dye work, you must have a magic touch to get colors like that! I can only get pastels and very light colors out of it. Also, you have made some seriously colorful socks in the past! Amazing!

  4. I don't know what people's problem is with orange, it's such a happy colour :D

I love all your socks, they're so colourful.

That's really interesting that you have synesthesia...I love reading about stuff like that. In what way does it manifest itself in you? (if you don't mind me asking)

    1. Orange is a great colour - I'm glad you agree :)

For me, synesthesia manifests mostly with numbers and days of the week. For example, 4 and Thursday are blue. Occasionally physical sensations have a colour and a texture - ice-brittle emerald green, or crushed velvet purple. Even numbers are untrustworthy and the number 27 is a beautiful, indescribable colour.

    2. Is it really geeky that I find that fascinating. I'm still sat here reading about it. Which reminds me, I need to ring the OU to see about their Health Science degree :D

  5. I love gray. It is my fallback favorite color after blue. The more stressful my life the more subdued colors I want to knit with. It's it funny how everything is tied to color.

  6. Such a great way to start the week! I feel like I learned a lot about you just from this one post.

  7. Crazy socks are the way to go! I have a bit of a fear of orange, but I think that is because it was our colour at university and so I spent the majority of the time feeling like a giant pumpkin, only more neon. I want to fall in love with grey -- I'm just having too much fun with other colours right now.

  8. I also have a love of crazy socks. I think it's because they can so easily be hidden but you know they're there...kind of like sexy underwear.

I did notice your blue kick and I honestly didn't know you loved orange. Seriously.

  10. Have you tried knitting the synesthesia socks? It's the perfect pattern for crazy color socks. My niece and a friend have a mild form of it. It seems like world is kinda cooler for it. :)

  11. I love orange too! Green is my favorite but orange is right up there. It's funny I have so much on my needles but I did go through a green phase. Great Post!

  17. I find myself really drawn to more and more "brights" like the ones you knit socks with ... but it's so funny to me, since I really never wear those colors! I wear a lot of blues and calming shades ... interesting, huh?

  18. I like orange, but the more autumney shades.....

  20. The green yarn you dyed is beautiful!

I'm also a big orange fan, but it can be hard to wear sadly.
