Hide Your Sources*

Well, I do have a finished object this week, but unfortunately I can't really show you *laughs* Here's a sneak peek though:

Enticing, no? *laughs*

What I can do, however, is tell you about the yarn. I received 6 balls of it in a big bag of yarn given to me by a colleague.

It started life like this:

Not something that appealed, if I'm honest. Very short colour repeats and a cream and blue combination meant that it was unlikely I would use it. But, it's a good quality 100% wool, and it seemed a shame to get rid of it... So I stashed it. Just in case *smiles*

And then the cunning plan of overdyeing it came to mind... So I grabbed the trusty Kool Aid and had a go. Most of what I used was dyed with grape, and some with black cherry. I'm really pleased with how it came out, and it became perfect for some secret knitting... So I got to use some stash and make a cool gift *grins*

I do have 3 and a half balls left, but they can wait until I come up with something else to do with them ;)

  2. Oh wow, I really think that is clever, dyeing it over the colour. Your little sneak peek showed some lovely colours! Way to get creative!

  3. the dyed yarn looks much better than the original! variegated that has such stark colour differences always looks too messy.

Its going to be pandemonium in blogland after christmas with everyone showing off their FOs! cant wait :D

  5. Great quote, and what a good idea to dye the wool! And I have to say, I would absolutely love to try out a white Christmas, it seems so much more magical :-) Although a bit hard to play backyard cricket in the snow ;-)

  6. Fabulous idea!!! I have been stashing cream wool that I have been able to get on sale and wondering what I would get to easily dye it...this may be my perfect answer!! You rock!!

  7. Great idea to overdye. I can't wait to see what you create. I have done that with a few yarns now and saw one friend do it to a whole finished shawl with breathtaking results.

  8. The small glimpse shows that overdyeing worked beautifully - can't wait to see the whole thing :)

  9. love the quote and that is too cool that you could get that with Koolaid. I have only dyed something once. It went okay but it was harder and messier than koolaid sounds; though maybe you are making sound easier than it was.

  10. It's such a good feeling...making use of something in a creative way like that, isn't it?? I think that that's part of the joy of having 'fiber friends', too...since often what is not especially useful to you can be given to- or swapped with-
someone who will be delighted with it!! XXO-

  19. People are sooooo sneaky right now, not many pictures of projects, lol. Kool aide...one of these days I must give it a try. Always assumed you had to have yarn that hadn't yet been dyed. How do you go about doing that when it's already finished yarn?

  21. Smart cookie! I'm afraid of over dying yarn. My concern is getting a muddy brown color by accident. Plus the yarn I would over dye is a dark color that I would enjoy more if it was lighter.

  22. You are one smart cookie, I love that you made your own color lot! It looks like they turned out great!
