Friday Fibre Frequency

Well, it's a Friday with no FO... And you know how much I hate that *laughs* And I've already done a few retrospectives, so no point boring you guys with another one of those.

But then I had an idea, as I was putting on my slouchy hand-knit hat... I wondered how often I have worn some of my knits, and decided to do a graph. Yep, I can be a bit of a geek sometimes!

  • So, as you can see, socks are (unsurprisingly) the most frequently worn item.
  • My Lore hoodie cardigan is my favourite garment, as is obvious from the graph.
  • Some of the winter accessories have recently seen the light of day again, such as my pink cowl and my mitts, as it is now cold enough for them, so their frequency should increase fairly quickly
  • My first proper garment, the brown jumper (or sweater for my international readers!), has been disappointly under-worn. I should rectify that this winter.
  • My Dragon Tail scarf (my hitchhiker) has seen quite a lot of wear already, considering that it was only recently finished.
As I was already having fun with graphs, I also decided to plot out how often I tend to use certain types of fibre in garments and accessories for myself...

This isn't representative of my stash, and I'm pretty sure my tastes have changed since I started knitting, but I do still love alpaca and wool. As you can see, though, I have a place for all different types of yarns, and although I prefer working with soft and beautiful yarns (although I haven't split out the cashmere and merino from the wool section), sometimes acrylic is the best option for the project.

And I haven't included stashed fibres, like my bamboo or llama yarn, but I'm looking forward to both of them *grins*

So, despite my lack of proper finished object, I hope this hasn't been too disappointing a post ;) I actually quite enjoyed looking at my knitting stats!

  1. So sweet of you to give a graphical view of your encounters with various types of yarns and how many times you have used your creations. Good job

  2. Very interesting....
Not disappointing at all. It make me wonder what MY trends are... all those things I've made that never get worn! ;)

  3. Got to love a good graph!! lol

  4. oooh, goodness, I'd hate to put all of my handmade and handknits in a graph. I wear something almost daily which always seems to include socks but hats, mitts, scarves and cowls are worn daily too.

It is interesting when you put it in to perspective. Don't worry about not having an FO. It's hard to have one weekly. It should be about the process and the fun you are having...and it appears that you are having fun.

    Have a great weekend.

  5. Love that you did this, it's an interesting (and different) way of looking at your knitting :). The funny thing will be when you go to pull out a hand knit item to wear and the graph pops into your head making you think "hmm, I haven't worn this one much!"

  6. Love the stats for knitting, I think socks and scarves would be my most worn.

  7. What a cool idea!!! (not that I would even attempt such a thing!!!) I wonder what a seasonal knitted graph would look like--might encourage more summer knitting? or maybe concentration on high wear seasons since they will wear out fastest...oh, the possibilities are endless.

  8. Ooo, you've tickled my accountant brain this morning. Reminding me how happy I am that I'm taking the morning off and sitting in front of my computer blog cruising. I also managed to miss driving to work in the first snow of the year...always a dicey proposition. Folks just can't remember from one winter to the next what to do. Thanks for the graphic illustrations, they were very interesting. Happy Fiber Arts Friday!

  10. Now you have us all thinking. I wear scarves and cowls a lot in the winter. And try to wear sweaters as much as possible. Don't know that I could come up with statistics though.

  11. Interesting. My socks also are the most frequently worn - they're laundered weekly and always selected first from the clean clothes. I was also surprised by how much mohair you've knit. I haven't knit any yet; I'm afraid it'll itch!

  12. *stares at the screen, aghast*

I'm not sure which surprised me the most - the fact that you thought to make these graphs, or the fact that you KNOW how many times you have worn things!!!!!!!

Great post as always! Have a fab weekend xxxx

    :D

  15. What a riot, this is wonderful! Now you can make sure you give all your woolens equal attention.

  16. Oh my you crack me up! It is interesting seeing what you wore. I have a feeling my graphs would be one straight line. xoxo

  17. Love the stats post, though unfortunately it is reminding me that I should be working on the statistics for my dissertation... =(

  18. haha what a great idea! how do you remember how often you've worn everything? I don't even really remember what I wore yesterday.

  19. You are too funny! I love the charts!!

  20. Love the graph! I think I wear my beaded Tilli Tomas scarf the most out of all of my FOs. Next would be any of my knitted hats. I wore two hats in particular all the time last year when I was going through chemo. I even slept with a few on! The world is a cold cold place with no hair.

  21. You are so funny! What is it about a graph that I love so much? Even more than a pie chart, and I love a good pie chart. Good to see I'm not the only knitting nerd out there :)

  22. As a scientist, combining both knitting and graphs/charts has made you oh so much more awesome in my book. I approve!

  23. Now do a chart for how often you knit not to get a FO, but because you loved the yarn!

  24. The charts are very fun. My favorite project name on your first chart is definitely the "So Called Scowl" -- I bet that one has a story to tell :-)

  25. Cool charts! And a very creative way to look at your past knits.

  26. Hooray! I love a bit of geekery :) Mmmm, graphs

  27. I love your graphs! My cowl and fingerless gloves are getting a lot of wear just now too :) It's great being able to wear things you've made yourself! :D

  28. That's such a fun idea! Great way to see your knitting/fibre tastes down in black and white (or rather, in pretty colours!)

  29. That is so clever. I think knitting does go with geekery. I've noticed it quite a bit. I record new stitches in spreadsheets.
