I Made a Book!

I think I mentioned a little while ago that I had published an ebook on kindle - well, it is now in actual paperback *seriously big grin*

Look!

It's a children's book about a magical teddy bear who helps kids through tough times - all around the world. I'm so proud of it, and I've had some lovely amazon reviews:

Anyway, I just wanted to share, because this is the coolest thing! Ok, so it's time to stop blowing my trumpet, but I'm just seriously excited that I wrote a book, and now it is in my hands *grins*

Projects AND Progress ;)

I have works in progress, yay *laughs*

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the scarf I posted about on Monday is my primary project right now, and I am pleased to find that I have nearly finished it *grins* This is particularly helpful as I am heading back to see family this weekend and can hand it over if it is fully done.

The top picture does have another project in it - which I was working on during my "I-hate-this-scarf-don't-wanna..." phase *laughs* It's nothing particularly exciting, but I have been planning to make leg-warmers for ages and it's cold now so I cast on.

First one is nearly done. Knitting this has demonstrated quite clearly why I don't particularly like the jumper I made with this yarn... I like brown, but this is so flat and boring a brown. There is no variation, nothing catches the light, it is just all one flat brown. Ah well, it'll keep my legs warm at least *laughs*

The book in the top picture is the third in the Maze Runner trilogy. I think I mentioned before that I don't think these books are particularly well written, especially compared to some of the other young adult fiction out there, but I am still really enjoying them which is what matters ;)

Project Monogamy

Surprisingly for me, I have only been working on one project this week. It's pretty close to being finished now that I'm on the last wedge. I'm really enjoying this knit, watching the yarn change through its colours is fun, and I'm a big fan of garter stitch when there is enough of a pattern to keep the interest *smiles*

Of course, project monogamy leaves little to write about on a Wednesday *laughs*

As for the book - I'm currently sticking with my young adult dystopia theme, with The Maze Runner. I enjoyed the story but I have to say the writing is not the best. Definitely not up to the high standards of some of the books in this genre that I have read. Having said that, I do plan to read the rest of the trilogy, so it can't be too bad!

Presents :)

Today is the 1 year anniversary of boyfriend and I getting together. Sappy, I know, but any excuse for presents, right? *laughs*

Boyfriend is excellent at present buying, and I'm very pleased with my goodies...

A couple of small/silly ones, because I am a big kid at heart *smiles* I love my bubble kit - so many differently shaped implements to have fun with ;)

Boyfriend bought the little package of bouncy putty for one reason only. Close up of the package...

He was so amused by the fact that the little pouch actually says "in envelope" that he just had to get it. It made me laugh so much that I have decided that more things should be packaged in envelopes, and state this information clearly on them *laughs* Ok, maybe you had to be there ;)

And the main present, Stitch 'n Bitch Superstar Knitting *grins* He bought me the first book for Christmas and knew how much I liked it, so decided to get the follow up. I'm very pleased with this, I like the way the books explain things, and there were a couple of tips I noticed last night that were so obvious and so simple yet I'd never even thought of them.

There are also a couple of patterns that I will probably make, especially the one below. I love it *grins* I'll change the length of the arms though... Those aren't entirely flattering for shorties like me ;)

Of course this will have to wait until I have got through some of my ever increasing stash (none of which fits this pattern unfortunately!) but all the more incentive to get through what I have ;)

Wednesday Progress

Before I start I just want to say a huge thank you to everyone who commented, shared their stories, sent me emails and messages, etc, following my post yesterday. Every single comment means the world to me and I was overwhelmed by the support and encouragement. Thank you. Sincerely.

So, on to WIPW and Yarn Along...

Sorry for the crappy picture, the rain soaked lighting was not conducive to getting a good shot!

As expected, I added a couple more inches to my cowl during a couple of train journeys at the weekend. It looks massively long for a cowl, I know, but the way it stretches means it needs to be even longer.

The little white knitting is going to be a nerd wars project. I wanted some garter stitch, across a few stitches so that progress is made quickly ;)

The book is technically a sequel to one I read a little while ago, but I think sequel is the wrong word. It takes place at the same sort of time as Autumn, but follows different characters and gives a little bit more information about the zombie apocalypse that wasn't in the first book. I'm enjoying it :)

Intermission

Sometime last week I looked at my WIP pile and was completely uninspired. I wanted to knit, but I didn't want to knit anything that I was already working on. I still want to complete them all, I just wasn't in the mood for them last week...

So I had a brief crafting intermission. I did some spinning, I dyed some yarn, and I cast on 2 new projects. And it felt wonderful. Instead of telling myself I should finish the projects already in progress, I shrugged and told myself it was totally ok to knit something completely different. Which sounds obvious, but sometimes I need to remind myself *laughs*

The rusty coloured knitting on the left is actually already finished, it only took a few hours. I'll show it off on Friday, so more details then ;)

The sage green is going to be a lacey shrug, using yarn I bought while I was in Las Vegas. The yarn is Cascade Dolce, a beautifully soft blend of alpaca, silk and wool. It's been really lovely to knit with, and this project is almost finished too. I just have a few more rows of ribbing to do around the neck and it's done *grins* And the lace pattern came out perfectly.

These 2 projects have really been a nice break from what I was working on - 2 things in fingering weight and 2 things in acrylic... Soft, fluffy, bigger yarn has been a nice change!

As for the book - you may have noticed a bit of a theme in my book choices recently... I've always loved Dystopian fiction, and with the recent success of The Hunger Games, there's a lot of it about at the moment. This one is based on the premise that all the adults/anyone over 15 disappears. It kinda reminds me of a little known TV show called The Tribe.

I do go through phases with reading - I'll read loads of crime fiction and then move on to satirical stuff, then on to dystopia, and so on.

Sunny Skies, Grey Knitting...

You know, it's funny but I always seem to finish the books I've been reading on a Tuesday night, leaving me with very little to say about the book in my picture on a Wednesday *laughs* Suffice to say, I haven't started Autumn yet, but I've heard it's pretty good ;)

Knitting progress has been good. You can sort of see that my two at a time socks have come a long way since last week *grins* They have heels now, and about an inch of leg. I was expecting them to take longer than usual, because obviously I'm knitting twice as much at once. I thought the time saving would be minimal, but the benefits of having both socks done at once would be more than worth it. And yet, they seem to be progressing much faster than I thought they would *grins* Which is excellent news and might mean that all socks must be 2 at a time from now on ;)

My Narragansett is also coming along fairly quickly:

Not much more to say about this than I have before, but I'm still loving the squishy yarn, and the pattern is nice and easy (especially at this point, where it is just stocking stitch in the round!)

I chose a pattern for my Gran's scarf, that I mentioned last week. It's the Lace Stripe Scarf, which is very simple but I think looks really soft and lovely in this yarn. I've made the garter stitch sections longer than the pattern, I think it shows off the lace panels better that way.

Boyfriend's sock hasn't got much further than last week, so I didn't picture it (also because then 3/4 of my pictured projects would be grey! Which seems funny considering the sun is out and I feel I should be knitting bright, spring-like colours... I do love grey yarn though!)

With a long weekend coming up, I'm hoping to make even more progress on some of these projects. Then I can get started on my brother's socks, and the Stripe Study Shawl. I'm itching to cast the shawl on, I roped boyfriend in to helping me wind the yarn "just in case" last night - although we only got through 1 skein. I "forgot" to tell him that Wollmeise is longer than the skeins he has helped with before *cheeky grin*

On the plus side, he's now very keen to procure me a ball winder ;)

New Books

I got a couple of new books recently...

Respect the Spindle - I saw this on another blog recently (although I'm sorry to say that I have forgotten whose!) and thought it would be a good investment. I'm still trying to learn to spin properly, not that I have done all that much lately, and I thought this might give me the impetus to get back to it.

I've only flicked through so far, but it's really quite comprehensive *laughs*

The second was a gift from cunning boyfriend. He spotted it while doing some shopping and decided to buy it for me *smiles*

There are some very cute, and some downright bizarre patterns in there. The book even came with the supplies needed to make the London Pigeon *laughs*

Wednesday WIP and Yarn Along

As I mentioned on Monday, these 2 projects have revived my love of knitting (which was waning a little) *grins*

My grey Narragansett  is progressing nicely, I haven't done a huge amount - I finished the twisted rib and now I'm on the increases for the yoke. In the picture you can see the small cable detail, which is great for keeping my interest without having to think too much ;) I'm loving the way the Fez yarn feels, it's all smooshy and lovely *grins*

My Euro Cowl is so much longer than last week (I think I had only done a couple of rows at that point)...

A couple of train journeys and the fact that it is perfect to work on while chatting means that it's now about 75% done! It looks bizarrely long for a cowl, but that's because the pattern is designed to stretch around the shoulders. It's so light and soft and I can't wait to finish it and show it off.

I finished the Hunger Games trilogy last week. I enjoyed them, I found it easy to get lost in the story, but there were lots of things that annoyed me about them too *laughs* The third book could have been much, much better, but as I had very low expectations (lots of people had mentioned that the third installment was awful) it actually wasn't as bad as I was expecting ;)

This week I'm about to start The Retribution, which is a follow up to a book earlier in the Tony Hill series. I haven't started it yet though, so not much to say about it!

Work In Progress Wednesday Number 42

As you can see, I have taken a slightly different approach to my picture this week *laughs* I know black and white isn't the usual for taking pictures of knitting, but the colours just wouldn't come through properly so I gave up on them. Also, the project at the bottom of the picture is a secret project for a swap, so I thought it would be a good way to show what I've been working on without ruining the surprise ;)

I didn't dig out the socks or vest, as I haven't worked on them at all this week. Time has been taken up by the swap knitting and the Shalom (as planned last week). I've also cast on and finished a couple of little projects for Nerd Wars, but I'll show them off on a Friday at some point.

I'm happy to say that I have made some good progress on Shalom...

The body is finished and I'm working on the arms now. I've decided that elbow length sleeves will look best with this, so I've got a few more inches of the first one to do, then the second and then I'm done *grins* Well, it needs blocking pretty badly, but still, pretty close to finished.

Book-wise - I decided to read the next Hunger Games book. Although the first one did annoy me in many ways, I still enjoyed the story. So I thought I might as well read the rest of the trilogy.

Blog Hub Swap Day 5

Day five... Only 2 more presents to open after today :( I'm enjoying this far too much to stop *laughs*

So, today's package had 2 wrapped pieces, a big one and a little one. Interesting...What were they?

2 awesome books *grins* The note that accompanied these said that Tink saw these and immediately thought of me. And how right she is! The essential foreign swear words is so funny (and although I don't swear on my blog, I am a little more sweary in real life!)

As for the "Picturesque Word Origins" book, it's amazing. I have quite a few posts that demonstrate just how much I love words, and reading about their origins is fascinating to me. I love this book, thank you so much Tink!

Yarn Cocktails

I realised that I completely forgot to tell you about a new knitting book that I bought after Christmas. It was in the sales, and I probably wouldn't have picked it up had it not been for the fact that it was only 50p *laughs*

The Knitter's Guide to Yarn Cocktails.

If I'm honest, I was most drawn to it by the picture on the cover, and the price ;) The book is slightly strange, with all the patterns named after cocktails - most of which don't bear any resemblance to the pattern or even the colour of the yarn used. But it is a bit of (cheap) fun, especially the slightly bizarre pattern descriptions!

There are a couple of patterns that I may consider making at some point. And there are a few that are, quite frankly, terrifying:

The Banana Boat Men's Boxers, for example.

Funnily enough, boyfriend has requested that I do not, ever, under any circumstances, make these for him *laughs*

Work In Progress Wednesday Number 34

Oooh, first week back for the work in progress Wednesday and yarn along  parties *waves* Hi everyone :)

Having finished my Cria (finally! More about that on Friday), as well as a project that was started and finished before ever setting foot on the blog, I actually only have a couple of WIPs on the go at the moment. Shocking, I know *laughs*

My Noro Striped Scarf version:

It's actually King Cole Riot, so the colours aren't as saturated as Noro would be, but I really like the more muted tones. It's quite a skinny scarf, as you can see, and I am planning to make it really long. Which makes it quite hard to photograph *laughs* I'm about halfway done, and it is a nice mindless knit, so hopefully it'll be finished fairly soon.

My other WIP is one I started as part of my desire to learn some new skills this year. As I haven't been knitting that long, everything I have learned so far is technically a new skill, but I feel like I haven't tried anything to challenge me in a little while.

So I decided it was time to try out colourwork *grins proudly* Plus, the pattern is of course charted, and I've never knit from a chart before. The fact that the chart is simple, just showing which colour goes where, seems like an excellent introduction to me ;)

I'm quite pleased with how this is going, I am even knitting with a different colour yarn in each hand (I started with both in one hand, dropping the colour I wasn't using, but that got annoying very quickly!) My tension isn't perfect, but hey, it's my first time with 2 colours and I'm just happy that it currently looks like it is supposed to ;)

As for my book, it's one I spotted on someone else's yarn along post a while back (I'm sorry, I can't remember who it was now) and thought it looked interesting. So it went onto my Christmas list and mum couldn't help but by it because it looked so strange. I'm quite enjoying it *smiles*

Good Morning Blogosphere

I've missed you *smiles* But it has been nice to be away for a little while.Of course, this does mean I have a blog reader groaning at the seams that'll take me weeks to catch up with, plus a whole bunch of stuff to tell you about.

First, I hope everyone had a lovely Christmas (or other holiday) and New Year.

I got some lovely crafty presents from my mum, brother and boyfriend *grins* My best present deserves a post of its own, so more on that tomorrow perhaps...

The very first present I opened in my stocking (yep, mum still does stockings even though we're grown ups - this is because she is awesome) is actually one of my favourite presents overall, a doodling/colouring book. It's so cool, I love doodling and I love colouring, so of course I have made a start ;)

My lovely brother bought me this book I have been lusting after for some time:

There are some great projects in here, one of which is a Morse Code Quilt. I've never tried quilting but I am tempted to, just for this one project *laughs*

Mum bought me some Knit Pro Cubics needles - square needles... I'd put them on my wishlist because I was intrigued and mum thought they sounded interesting...

I did actually get 2 sets, but one is already in use ;) Well, I had to cast something on to test them out of course *grins*

Boyfriend very wonderfully bought me some yarn. He was apparently quite relieved to discover that I had put something specific on my wishlist (but, bless him, he was planning to go onto Ravelry to do some research on what to get - I almost wish I hadn't put anything on my wishlist now - I wonder what he'd have come up with!)

Knit Picks Imagination sock yarn, in Unicorn. I'd put this on my list after discovering that my sock yarn selection is sadly lacking in anything containing alpaca. Obviously this had to be rectified *laughs*

Well, as this already quite a long catch-up post, I shall leave it there. But I have more to tell you about- I haven't even started on the reveals of the Christmas gift knitting projects yet ;)

Work In Progress Wednesday Number 33

As I'm sure you can imagine, the time of year means that the majority of my crafting time has been taken up with gift knitting *laughs* However I have had time for a small amount of other knitting as well...

Although, technically the scarf is a gift for mum, she knows about it and bought the yarn herself, so it isn't a Christmas gift but I'd still like to finish it soon so that she can enjoy it during the cold weather. It's a few inches longer than last week...

It looks a different colour in every picture, thanks to the hideously grey weather and overhead light combination *sigh* It's much more attractive in real life. 

In the top picture you can also see a small purple item poking out. I cast on for something very quick and simple for myself, but it does also have a Christmas-related reason (see, I can justify knitting for myself even at this time of year!) The yarn I'm using is some Sirdar Crofter that my lovely brother bought me for my birthday. He bought a couple of small balls of different yarns, and I think he was a bit saddened to discover that they weren't big enough to knit anything substantial. So, for when I see him, I wanted to be wearing something useful that I made from his gift, to show how much I really appreciated him buying me yarn *smiles*

You will notice that my Cria cardigan is absent from the picture... Well, partly because it is too big to easily pick up and put down between other projects, but mainly thanks to this:

This is the remainder of 3 balls of dishcloth cotton I have been frantically knitting up for a final gift. As Cria is also a cotton yarn (albeit a blend), I decided against working on it as well. Which is a shame, as there is only one sleeve remaining, but important for my continued enjoyment of knitting *laughs*

As for the book, well I think I have read about 6 pages in the last week. Which is horrifying really, as I usually read at least 2 books in that time! But, everything has its time I guess ;)

Work In Progress Wednesday Number 30

I have a very blue work in progress picture today *laughs*

I've been working on boyfriend's hat, as I mentioned on Monday. However, although I said I was using the pattern "A Hat fit for a Boyfriend", I realised that I had done everything in 2x2 rib rather than the 3x2 in the pattern. So I'll have to figure out the appropriate decreases somehow ;)

And then I have to remind myself that I am knitting it for boyfriend, and even though it matches my cardigan perfectly, it is not for me!

Cria now has pockets (which I tried to take a picture of but that didn't go so well, so you'll just have to trust me!) And I am about halfway down the first sleeve. I'm pretty impressed with the continued progress of this, and I'm hoping the motivation holds out!

But then I realised just how close it now is to Christmas, so I have a feeling that progress on bloggable projects will slow as I work on getting the secret ones done in time *tries not to panic*

Bookwise, I got bored of last week's book and I'd seen someone else on yarn along reading one of Philip Pulman's His Dark Materials trilogy. I love these books so I picked up the first one and have been reading so much that I am now halfway through the third book *laughs* This of course doesn't do much for my knitting productivity, but never mind ;) it's always a balance, isn't it?!

Work In Progress Wednesday Number 29

Amazingly, I have not cast anything on this week *faints from shock* Which does make for a slightly less interesting picture of course.

I have been really motivated to get Cria moving recent, which is great as it's been on the needles since July with very little progress week on week. Last week I noticed that I was about 10 rows from starting the pocket openings... Well, I got to those, then I realised I was only a few rows from finishing the pocket detailing, so I did that.

After that it was 20 rows of boring until the stockinette portion of the body was finished, so I motored on. And then I was only 14 rows of garter stitch from finishing the body entirely... So I did *grins*

It's amazing how much more engaged I got with this knit once I could see an end in sight. Plus, I swapped the stitch holders I had been using for the arm stitches for scrap yarn so that I could try it on and see if I needed to add any extra increases to the hip section. As soon as I put it on, I wanted to finish it because I can't wait to wear it.

After being so bored and fed up of this project, I've been really enjoying my second wind and so I haven't been working on anything else at all. I just have the pockets and the sleeves to finish now. I did consider making the short sleeved version, just so I could wear it sooner, but I shall be sensible because I know I will prefer to have the long sleeves in the end ;)

I didn't have a book on the go, so I grabbed this on off my shelf. I can't remember buying it at all, but I think I was tempted by the "misadventures" in the title *laughs*

Work In Progress Wednesday Number 27

In an amazing turn of events, I have actually been following my plan (which I made 2 weeks ago - this might be the longest I have ever stuck to a plan!), so the fuzzy ballet sweater has been making progress and my sock is also a little further along.

The sweater now has 2 finished fronts, which leaves the sleeves and the ties left to do. I have enough yarn to make the sleeves longer than elbow length, so I'm going to do that. Also, I decided to try doing the sleeves two at a time. I haven't converted the pattern into the round (that was just a little more maths than I care to do *laughs*) but because the yarn is so fine it is easy to get both on the same needle:

Just have to make sure I don't get too tangled ;) It's good practice for my next pair of socks though, as I want to try making them two at a time to avoid second sock syndrome!

Talking of socks, my super long sock now has a heel and a gusset, thanks to me having a sudden burst of sock motivation at the weekend. It seems that I have to be in the mood for socks, and this one has been languishing thanks to sock-burnout. Happy to say it seems to be back on track now though *smiles*

The book I am reading is One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. While the film is actually really good, the book is so much better.

A few people asked last week what I thought of the book I posted, The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake... Hmmmm. Well I certainly wouldn't recommend it to a friend, let's put it that way *laughs* I was very disappointed, it was such an interesting concept but all of the plot points that could have been great were glossed over, whereas the boring stuff just went on and on. The writing style was frustrating, and the plot just went all weird at the end (way beyond what I would expect from the initial concept). So yeah, not recommended!

Work In Progress Wednesday Number 26

Well, I actually stuck to the plan I made last week *pauses for the amazement to die down* ;)

I have finished the Hitchhiker, just trying to decide now whether or not I want to block it. I love it and will be showing it off just as soon as I have determined it is 100% finished.

I am finally at the point where I can start the heel on my sock, after knitting it (as planned) on the train to and from visiting mum. It seems to have taken ages, and I have been cursing the day I decided to make it as long as I did *laughs* But I'll be happy I did once it is finished, I'm sure. I'm still loving the yarn, which is the one I dyed myself using Kool Aid. Once I start buying yarn again, I will definitely be dyeing some more, it's so much fun ;)

And, as planned, (seriously, I am amazed that I have stuck to a plan for an entire week - this is unheard of!) I have been giving some attention to my fuzzy ballet sweater:

It doesn't look like it's that much longer than last week, but as this is the front and I'm on the decreases, it should go pretty quickly from here. Then it's just sleeves (3/4 length so they shouldn't take long) and the ties. Hopefully I can get this off the needles fairly soon. Of course, the Christmas knitting does take priority at the moment, so it'll be longer than it might ordinarily take!

The book I'm reading is The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake, about a girl who can taste the cook's emotions in the food she eats. I have been intrigued by it since it was first published and have finally got around to starting it. Not sure what I think yet, as I'm not far into it... I like the concept but I'm not sure I am enjoying the writing style.

Work In Progress Wednesday Number 24

Just a group shot today, as nothing has progressed enough to warrant its own picture ;)

Cria - well, I'm not surprised to say that another week has gone by with very little work on this. I keep meaning to just focus and get on with it, but after a few interminably long rows I get fed up ;)

Sock - about half an inch of progress. I tend to only pick this up when I can't decide what else to knit *laughs* I would like to get on with it, so I think a long car or train journey will be in my future - knitting socks seems the best plan for a train journey, otherwise I worry about poking people with my long needles *grins*

Fuzzy Ballet Sweater - probably the project with the most progress so far. I've finished the left front, but haven't cast on for the right yet. It's a fairly quick and easy knit, which is good as I need to be seeing some progress on something at least!

Hitchhiker -  as the rows get longer, it's hard to see the length increase as quickly, but I think I've completed another 6 "teeth" since last week. In fact, I need to switch to longer needles as I started it on a bizarrely short pair and I'm running out of space *laughs*

The reason for the lack of discernible progress is, of course, the time spent working on projects that I can't blog about. It's frustrating, but the recipients of the secret projects wouldn't be too surprised if their gifts had been showing up here every week for a progress update!

Book - another Christopher Brookmyre (one of my favourite authors). "All Fun and Games Until Somebody Loses an Eye". Great title; easy and enjoyable book. I tend to go for books I have already read when I'm busy/tired/stressed/not feeling 100% - they require so much less attention *grins*
